At Cove Jewellery’s The Rocks workshop, ring resizing is performed on-site by our jewellery artisans. We work on all metal types and ring styles, with a particular depth of experience in precious stone settings: from opal engagement rings and delicate crystal opal bands to Argyle pink diamond solitaires. Most resizing orders are completed within three to five business days. Express service is available.

How We Resize Rings, Our On-Site Process

Every ring that enters our Rocks workshop is assessed individually before any work begins. Our artisans examine the structural integrity of the setting, the metal type and purity, any gemstone placements, and whether the ring has special design features,  engraving, channel-set stones, or pavé work, that require additional care during resizing.

Sizing Up (Making a Ring Larger)

We make a precise incision in the shank at the base of the ring. A carefully measured piece of matching metal, gold, platinum, or silver, sourced to match the original alloy is inserted and soldered into place using the appropriate joining technique for the metal type. The seam is then filed, shaped, and polished to be imperceptible. We never stretch rings: stretching thins the metal and risks distorting the shank or destabilising stone settings. What you receive back is structurally identical to the original.

Sizing Down (Making a Ring Smaller)

We remove a measured section of the shank, bring the two ends together, and join them using solder appropriate to the metal. The join is then filed, re-formed to the original profile, and polished. The ring’s weight changes slightly (the removed metal is weighed and documented), but the structural integrity and design remain intact. We do not shave metal from the inside of the band, a common shortcut that weakens the shank over time.

Special Considerations: Opal, Stone Settings & Complex Designs

Rings containing Australian opals, Argyle pink diamonds, or other precious stones require additional care. Before resizing, we assess whether the stone needs to be temporarily removed and reset to protect it from the heat of the soldering process,  particularly important for opals, which are sensitive to thermal shock. Full eternity bands, titanium, and tungsten rings cannot be resized; we will tell you this upfront rather than attempt a modification that will damage the piece.

Ring Resizing Cost in Sydney

The cost of ring resizing depends on four factors: the metal type, the number of sizes to be adjusted, whether any gemstones need to be temporarily removed and reset, and the complexity of the design. Simple yellow gold resizes on a plain band are the most straightforward. Platinum and white gold require specialised solder and slightly more finishing work. Rings with pavé, channel-set, or tension-set stones require additional time.

What Rings Can (and Cannot) Be Resized

    Rings We Can Resize

We resize the large majority of rings that come through our workshop, including:

    • Yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold in all karats (9K, 14K, 18K, 22K)
    • Platinum and palladium
    • Sterling silver and fine silver
    • Rings with solitaire, bezel, claw, and most prong settings
    • Rings with accent diamonds or small side stones (stone removal assessed case-by-case)
    • Australian opal rings, boulder opal settings, and opal engagement rings
    • Rings with engraving (engraving can often be re-applied at additional cost)

    Rings We Cannot Resize

Some ring types cannot be resized safely, and we will always tell you this upfront rather than attempt a modification:

    • Full eternity bands (stones set all the way around — no workable shank area)
    • Tungsten carbide and titanium rings (these metals cannot be soldered)
    • Rings with extremely intricate art nouveau or filigree shanks (structural risk)
    • Rings that have already been significantly thinned by prior resizing

In cases where resizing isn’t possible, we can discuss alternatives: having a new ring made, sizing beads inserted for a temporary adjustment, or ring guards, we will walk you through every option.

Frequently Asked Questions - Ring Resizing

Q1: How much does ring resizing cost in Sydney?

Ring resizing cost depends on the metal type, the number of sizes being adjusted, and whether any stones need to be removed and reset. Simple yellow gold resizes on plain bands are the most affordable. Platinum and white gold resizes carry a higher cost due to specialised materials and finishing. For a specific quote, email us at repairs@covejewellery.store with a photo of your ring. We respond within one business day and will give you a clear price before any work begins.

Q2: How long does ring resizing take in Sydney?

Most standard ring resizing orders at our Rocks workshop are completed within 3–5 business days. Rings requiring stone removal and resetting, or those with complex design elements, may require 5–7 days. Express service is available for an additional fee — contact us to discuss your timeline. Mail-in resizing typically takes 7–10 business days from the date we receive your ring.

Q3: Can you resize an opal ring?

Yes. Opal rings require additional care during resizing because opals are sensitive to heat and thermal shock. Our artisans assess whether the opal needs to be temporarily removed from its setting before the soldering process begins. Where stone removal is required, it is included as part of the resizing work. We have extensive experience working with Australian black opals, boulder opals, and crystal opal settings — both from pieces purchased at Cove and brought in from elsewhere.

Q4: Can any ring be resized?

Most rings can be resized, but not all. Rings that cannot be safely resized include full eternity bands (stones set all the way around with no workable shank), tungsten carbide and titanium rings (these metals cannot be soldered), and rings that have been significantly thinned by prior resizing. We assess every ring before quoting and will tell you upfront if resizing is not possible, along with alternatives.

Q5: Do I need an appointment for ring resizing at The Rocks?

No appointment needed for drop-off. You can bring your ring to our showroom at C8/200 Cumberland Street, The Rocks, any time during opening hours (Monday–Saturday, 10am–5pm). Our team will assess it while you wait and provide a quote on the spot. If you prefer to email a photo first for a preliminary quote before making the trip, contact us at repairs@covejewellery.store.
