Doublets and Triplets — Not for Engagement Rings
This is the one place we'll give unqualified advice: do not choose a doublet or triplet opal for an engagement ring.
Doublets and triplets are composite stones — a thin slice of opal bonded to a dark backing with adhesive. They're wonderful for pendants and earrings where water exposure is minimal. But daily hand-washing, the inevitable shower occasions when the ring doesn't come off, and the general water exposure of daily life will eventually cause the adhesive bond to fail. The opal will cloud or separate from the backing within a few years.

The trade-off: bezel settings cover more of the opal's edge than prong settings do, which can slightly reduce how much light enters the stone from shallow angles. For most opal varieties, this barely affects visible play-of-colour. For transparent crystal opals, it can subtly reduce the "floating colour" effect — though high-quality bezel design (with a partial or open-back setting) can mitigate this.
Halo Setting — Protection Plus Visual Drama
A halo setting surrounds the centre opal with smaller diamonds or other stones. The halo serves two purposes: it creates a visual barrier that absorbs accidental impacts before they reach the opal, and it adds sparkle that complements the opal's play-of-colour rather than competing with it.

Daily Care for an Opal Engagement Ring
If you commit to an opal engagement ring, committing to the care that goes with it is non-negotiable. The rules aren't complicated:
Remove before physical activity. Gym, sports, manual work, gardening — anything that risks impact. This is the single most important habit.
Remove before cleaning. Harsh chemicals, bleach, and household cleaners can damage opal. Even prolonged water exposure (washing dishes) is worth avoiding.
